"Benefit form KiHS" The Ontario government is committed to enabling all students to reach their potential, and to succeed. With the release of the Ministry of Education document Achieving Excellence: A Renewed Vision for Education in Ontario (2014), expectations have been raised both for the education system and for the development of the potential of Ontario’s children. ...
The ministry recognizes that every student is unique and that each must have opportunities to achieve success according to his or her own interests, abilities, and goals. It also recognizes that among children and youth who are at risk of not succeeding are those with special education needs.1 To ensure that these students have every opportunity to succeed, the vision for special education in Ontario continues to be refined and, in the process, achievement gaps are being narrowed. KiHS offer following benefits. 1. Choice
Whether you choose KiHS or another school, be sure you ask: “How many university preparation courses and college preparation courses do you offer in grades 11 and 12? Do you offer academic courses in grades 9 and 10?” In Ontario high schools, there is a choice of pathways for students depending on whether they want to apply to college or university, or if they intend to enter the workforce right after graduating. This choice is not always available to aboriginal students leaving their communities in the north to attend school. At KiHS, we do offer this choice.
2. Learn at Home
KiHS has classrooms in about a dozen communities: Bearskin Lake, Deer Lake, Fort Severn, Fort William, Keewaywin, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Mishkeegogamang, Mattagami, McDowell Lake, Nibinamik, North Spirit Lake, Poplar Hill, Sachigo Lake, Weagamow Lake (North Caribou Lake) and Webequie. If your community is not on the list, ask your local education authority to contact us if they are interested in starting a KiHS program. We believe every student should have a choice to remain in their community and still earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. KiHS students are better able to participate in traditional land-based activities than if they were attending school in an urban setting.
3. Support
What makes KiHS successful is our team of OCT certified teachers who create our excellent courses. These teachers live and work in our partner communities. They are there to support you, the student, and to meet face to face with parents and the community. If you ever have questions, please visit the local classroom. This connection with the First Nation helps our teachers be better able to make courses that our students can relate to and be successful in, making KiHS unlike any other high school.
